6 signs its time to quit the 9-5 life

6 signs its time to quit the 9-5 life

Have you woken up on a Monday morning and dreaded your life because you need to endure five consecutive days at a 9-5 corporate job that sucks the inspiration and motivation out of you? We have all been there! The only highlight of your morning is the warm, delicious coffee that awakens your soul, and not the fact that you are making a significant contribution to this world and accomplishing your goals. There are some individuals who do love and enjoy their corporate job, but a lot of people do not share this feeling towards their job. If that is the case, it is about time you consider taking charge and becoming your own boss!

It might sound like a scary decision at first, but you know that this is something you have been contemplating for a while now. That dream you have been thinking about non-stop, if not now, when are you going to chase that life you have always wanted and deserve? It may be challenging to decide to give up your steady paycheck and head into the great unknown. But what if your steady paycheck (that barely covers your monthly expenses) is what is limiting you from tapping into your maximum potential and having it all?

Here are six signs that now is the time to take that big leap and leave the miserable 9-5 corporate world for that self-fulfilling entrepreneurial life you have always dreamt of.

    The inspiration has died

Studies show that the average human spends one-third of his or her life working. That is a big chunk of your life you could be doing something that inspires, energises and makes you feel alive. The job that you invest so much of your time in should give you a sense that you are part of something big. It is not just about performing your daily roles and responsibilities. If you are having a hard time finding that inspiration and fulfilment, this is going to impact your creativity and productivity. It frequently leads to people questioning their abilities and hating the version of themselves their job has created. Ask yourself, what is it that makes me feel that thrill and rush, what is it that gets my engine running? If it isn’t your current job, this is a sure-fire sign that you need to think about moving onto something that inspires you to make the best use of your skills and talent!

    Sick of being controlled

Does your job make you feel suffocated to the point where you want to pull your hair out? Instead of motivating you to be immensely creative and productive, your job drains all the energy out of you. It is frustrating to feel like an eighth-grader that needs to get the teacher’s permission before doing anything. A lot of individuals believe that their corporate job controls their life and dictates everything. When to take a vacation, what time to have lunch, how to dress, when to start work, who to work with, how to speak, the list never ends. It often brings up feelings of anger, frustration and powerlessness to the surface. As humans, we crave freedom. We are entitled to think, act, be and work how we desire to. We should have the freedom to dress how we want, pick our own hours and not have to listen to co-worker Peggy moan about her miseries for 9 hours a day. Becoming your own boss puts you in the driver’s seat and allows you to take back control of your life. It gives you the freedom to live life on your own terms and make your own rules!

    Feeling undervalued and unappreciated

As Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs clearly states, feeling respected, appreciated, valued and recognised for what you bring to the table is a psychological need that is present in every one of us. Feeling undervalued and unappreciated can take a massive hit on your mental health and self-esteem. The question “am I good enough?” may continuously be running through your mind, and you will start to doubt your self-worth. At this point, giving your best effort can seem almost impossible. However, a job that does not respect or appreciate your hard work, loyalty, talents and efforts can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. It will motivate you to get out of the toxic environment that puts you down and find a place that uplifts and values you.

    No room for growth

Helping someone else achieve their goals and live their dream will only get you so far up the corporate ladder. Some people enjoy the comfort and security that comes with sitting in the backseat while someone else drives and takes the lead. However, some individuals feel powerless and disappointed in this position. For them, the best way to define your own freedom is sitting in that driver’s seat and calling your own shots and working to achieve your own goals and chase your own dream. All your unique ideas that were neglected or unacknowledged at your corporate job might make you the next Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. You will be able to leave behind a legacy, be proud of your life’s work and feel satisfied and content with your achievements. When you are your own boss, the room for growth is infinite.

No time for the things you love to do

How many times have you wanted to do something you enjoy, but have put it on the back burner? Your corporate job is taking up nine hours of your day and draining all of the energy out of you. We often hear people blame their 9-5 job for not having the time or energy to focus on their health and fitness. Preparing healthy meals and joining a fitness class can take up a lot of time and be tiring, especially on days you have to stay back to finish your workload. However, it does not always have to be this way. You don’t have to sacrifice your health, give up your hobbies and socialising just so that you can pay your mortgage on time and put food on the table. When you become an entrepreneur, it may not be the easiest in the beginning. You will need to put in the extra hours and a lot more effort until your business is stable. But this is temporary; there is no need to sit at your desk for 9 hours straight. That freedom to do what you want and love will be something you can achieve only by becoming your own boss!

Chasing the dream that you always wanted

The most compelling reason to become your own boss is that dream you had since you were a child, and you often catch yourself daydreaming about how good life would be if you were living that dream. You might have already spoken about it to your close friends and family and researched about it multiple times. You might have even ALMOST quit your job to work on your dream! There may be a couple of things that are stopping you from achieving it. Feeling you don’t know where to start, the timing is not right, you are unsure if it is going to work, it is too expensive or risky etc. Sometimes, the only thing holding us back from achieving great things is ourselves. If you have been seriously considering becoming your own boss, maybe now is a great time to put your fears aside and take the plunge and start living your dream!

At AMOS Label, we cater to the brave, resilient and ambitious souls that want to live and work on their own terms and #definefreedom. Freedom can mean different things to different individuals. For some, freedom is being your own boss, having full control of your life and playing by your own rules. For others, freedom means doing a job that you love and enjoy that provides you comfort and security. No matter how you #definefreedom, what is important is that it makes you feel empowered, energised and inspired to be your best and most productive self!
